The Blindfold Padawan is now 3-3 in blindfold play. 3-1 in Rapid 30 minute games and 0-2 in 5 minute games. The longer time control allows for more reflection time and to remember where the pieces are. In the following game, I was able to checkmate rather quickly due to some big opening mistakes from my opponent and the shark eye looking for a quick win!
Eventually, I will show you one of my sad losses. As I am relatively new to playing blindfold, there are some big mistakes to be shown. My only experience playing blindfold was as the captain of my high school team. On the way to tournaments, I would play against the team sitting in the back of the van while I contemplated in the front. I did usually win as I probably 200-300 points higher rated than my board 2.
The game you will see here is a great instruction game on how to destroy the king's guard, turn a temporary sacrificed into a material advantage, and quickly go for mate. It provides a cautionary tale about looking for the right defense when under attack and developing your pieces instead of moving the queen around a bunch of times in the opening. Plus, finishing off your opponent as quickly as possible with no chance of counter attack!
Enjoy!
